Over 665,000 Kiwis participate in nationwide earthquake and tsunami practice.
New Zealand is holding its annual national earthquake drill, ShakeOut, with over 665,000 people taking part across the country. The event aims to test New Zealanders' preparedness for earthquakes and tsunamis.
Minister for Emergency Management and Recovery Mark Mitchell highlighted Gisborne's significant participation in the drill, with 27 percent of its population signed up. Mitchell will be joining students at Wainui Beach School in Gisborne for the event, which he will livestream on the Get Ready website from 9:15am.
ShakeOut provides an opportunity for people to familiarize themselves with their tsunami evacuation routes and make household emergency plans. Those in coastal areas are encouraged to sign up and practice their escape routes during the drill. The event can be completed within two weeks, and registration is available on the Get Ready website.
New Zealanders are being reminded to learn about earthquake and tsunami risks in their area, particularly those living near the coast, to ensure they know their evacuation zones and have a plan in place.
