Upgraded acute mental health unit now available for patients.
Gisborne Hospital's new Te Whare Awhi Ora facility was officially opened by Minister for Mental Health Matt Doocey on December 11, 2024. The upgraded $31.1 million unit replaces the existing eight beds with a ten-bed facility featuring five general ward rooms, three high-dependency rooms, and two short-stay rooms.
The new facility will allow people to receive timely and modern mental health care models. According to Minister Doocey, increasing access to mental health support is a priority for their Government. The upgrade aims to provide improved access across regions to mental health services, enabling New Zealanders to get the help they need when required.
Te Whare Awhi Ora will be open to patients from January 2025, marking an important step in the region's mental health and addiction system development.
