Transport Minister Simeon Brown announces funding confirmation.
Construction on the second Ashburton Bridge is expected to begin in 2026. Transport Minister Simeon Brown welcomed decisions by the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) and Ashburton District Council, which have confirmed funding for the project. This will boost resilience along State Highway 1 in Canterbury and improve connectivity.
The recent flooding events in Ashburton highlighted the importance of this connection, which carries 24,000 vehicles daily. The new bridge is expected to significantly enhance the South Island's supply chain resilience and unlock land for development in Tinwald, allowing for further growth. NZTA is working with Ashburton District Council to confirm details, including the final scope, consenting pathway, and preferred delivery arrangements.
The Government has listed the Bridge in the Fast Track Approvals Bill to expedite consenting. Minister Brown thanked Ashburton District Council for confirming their share of funding and acknowledged the advocacy efforts of local officials, including Mayor Neil Brown and MP James Meager. The project is expected to deliver strong benefits to Ashburton and surrounding South Island communities by boosting economic growth.
