New rules require increased jet fuel storage near Auckland Airport.
The Associate Energy Minister Shane Jones has announced new regulations that demand fuel companies hold at least 10 days of jet fuel near New Zealand's busiest airport, Auckland Airport, to prevent supply disruptions. This move comes after a 2017 pipeline rupture affecting over 270 flights and the 2019 Government Inquiry into the Auckland Fuel Supply Disruption.
The new requirement aims to provide resilience against potential disruptions, particularly for international connections. The change will be implemented by November 2026, allowing time for engineering works and enabling fuel companies to act before the busy summer travel season. According to Mr Jones, consultation with industry suggests that an existing option at the Wiri Terminal may meet this new requirement.
The Government has emphasized the importance of fuel security and its commitment to safeguarding New Zealand's economy against disruptions to jet fuel supply.
