Flood Protection Works to Accelerate in Māngere

Flood Protection Works to Accelerate in Māngere

A major push to protect hundreds of properties from flooding.

Environment Minister Penny Simmonds and Minister for Emergency Management and Recovery Mark Mitchell have announced an Order in Council to expedite flood mitigation works in at-risk areas of Mangere, Auckland. The decision aims to reduce the risk of flooding to life and property, as well as increase infrastructure resilience.

The move comes following devastating floods and Cyclone Gabrielle in early 2023, which had a significant impact on communities across Auckland. Te Ararata and Harania in Māngere were among the hardest-hit areas, with 376 properties at risk of flooding again.

Typically, such works require complex resource consents, taking up to a year or longer to grant. However, the Order in Council will speed up the process, allowing works to begin this summer. The temporary law change has been developed in response to a request from Auckland Council, following community consultation exercises.
