Fisheries Offences Punishment Overhauled

Regulatory changes come into effect on April 10, introducing a broader range of penalties for fisheries offences in New Zealand.

Oceans and Fisheries Minister Shane Jones announced the new measures, which include infringement fees ranging from $200 to $500 depending on the severity of the offence. This change aims to provide more proportionate punishment for recreational and commercial fishers who break the rules.

New infringement offences will also apply to breaches of customary fishing regulations with fees ranging from $250 to $500. Commercial spearfishing will be allowed in most waters around the South Island and lower North Island, while the use of underwater breathing apparatus (UBA) for harvesting scallops has been approved.

The changes are intended to improve the enforcement process and free up resources for more serious offending cases. Minister Jones stated that prosecution remains an option where necessary, and fishers who break the rules will face consequences.

The new regulations come into effect on April 10, with further information available on MPI's website.
