New Zealand records a decrease in violent crime victims.
New data from the New Zealand Crime and Victims Survey reveals a significant reduction in the number of victims of violent crime nationwide. According to Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith, there were 14,000 fewer victims over the 12 months to August 2024 compared to the same period in June 2024.
The decrease was particularly notable in Auckland and Wellington, with a 26% and 21% drop respectively. While the results are promising, the minister acknowledges that data volatility is expected in the coming months before a long-term trend emerges.
Goldsmith attributes the positive outcomes to Police enforcing new gang laws and ongoing work to reform sentencing. He remains optimistic about continued progress towards achieving the goal of reducing victims of serious violent crime by 20,000 by 2029. The survey covers a 24-month period, with results from Labour's previous policies still being felt.
