Labour backs farmers' concerns over GE bill.
Labour is urging the Government to slow down the Gene Technology Bill after farmers raised concerns that it's progressing too quickly. Labour agriculture spokesperson Jo Luxton says the Bill's process has been rushed, ignoring calls for an extension to public consultation from major farming groups.
Fonterra, Beef + Lamb and Dairy NZ had asked for more time to consider the Bill, but their request was blocked by Government members of the select committee. Labour trade spokesperson Damien O'Connor warns that rushing the Bill could put New Zealand's reputation at risk. He also criticises the lack of a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis and investigation into potential trade impacts.
Labour is calling on the Government to listen to farmers' concerns, conduct further research, and properly consult with the public before proceeding with the Bill. The party says it supports innovation in farming but believes that a more careful approach is needed to ensure New Zealand's clean and green reputation is protected.
