Extra Security for Hospital Emergency Departments

Extra Security for Hospital Emergency Departments

Health Minister Dr Shane Reti announces additional security measures to ensure the safety of patients, visitors, and health workers in hospital emergency departments across New Zealand this summer.

The Health Minister has reiterated that violence against healthcare staff will not be tolerated. To address concerns about ED safety during peak periods, the Government has committed $31 million over four years for increased security and training. This includes hiring 44 additional full-time security personnel for high-priority EDs, with most positions already filled. The funding also provides a flexible package to surge security support across all 33 emergency departments when needed.

In preparation for summer events, an additional $408,000 has been allocated for surge security into hospitals in case of major incidents or events requiring a greater presence. Furthermore, training on de-escalation and safe restraint techniques will be rolled out starting January 13, with all eight priority EDs expected to be fully trained by May 2025. The Government aims to create a safe and welcoming environment for those working or visiting emergency departments.
