Drive Safely This Summer

Kiwis urged to drive responsibly this summer.

Transport Minister Simeon Brown has warned motorists that Police will be enforcing road rules throughout the holiday period. The Minister stresses that poor decision-making on the roads can be a major concern, particularly during stressful times.

According to Mr Brown, drivers can expect to see Police anywhere and anytime on the roads. Enforcement efforts are focused on deterring speeding, driver impairment, and other hazardous behavior. The Government aims to reduce alcohol-related deaths by increasing enforcement and providing new tools for Police.

In 2023/24, over 850,000 more alcohol breath tests were conducted compared to the previous year, with a target of 3.3 million tests per annum. The Ministry is also progressing legislation to enable roadside oral fluid drug testing in 2025.

To stay safe on the roads this summer, Minister Brown advises planning ahead, checking weather conditions, determining break locations, and ensuring sobriety before driving. The official holiday period begins at 4 pm on December 24th and ends at 6 am on January 3rd.
