Labour has criticized the Government for its failure to provide certainty to disability communities after a year of changes to funding.
The abrupt removal of subsidies for equipment, respite care and activities by the previous government had far-reaching consequences, leaving many disabled people and their families struggling financially. Acting Labour spokesperson on disability issues Carmel Sepuloni stated that the community's stories were "dire" and highlighted numerous examples of the negative impact of these changes.
According to Sepuloni, key concerns include inadequate funding for disability care homes, low pay for disabled workers, a freeze on implementing Whaikaha and Enabling Good Lives programs. The government's inaction has resulted in continued uncertainty for the community.
The call by Labour to prioritize the needs of disability communities comes as public consultations close next Monday. Sepuloni urged those affected to share their stories and encouraged Minister Louise Upston to take concrete action to address these ongoing concerns.
