Defence Chief Appointed with Expertise

Brendan Horsley's appointment as Inspector-General of Defence confirmed.

New Zealand Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith has announced the approval of Brendan Horsley's appointment as the new Inspector-General of Defence, a role established to provide independent oversight of the New Zealand Defence Force. Horsley, currently serving as the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security since June 2020, brings extensive experience to his new position.

With a background in senior roles at Crown Law, including Deputy Solicitor-General and national Director of the Public Defence Service, Horsley's appointment was welcomed by Minister Goldsmith, who praised his willingness to contribute expertise. The Inspector-General of Defence will oversee investigations into incidents involving the New Zealand Defence Force and assess potential improvements to Defence Force policies and procedures.

The position was established in response to a recommendation from the Inquiry into Operation Burnham, aiming to provide enhanced oversight and accountability within the Defence Force.
