The government has announced further cuts to the research and innovation sector, targeting the successful Marsden Fund.
The Marsden Fund supports crucial studies in public health, nursing, law, education, and Māori studies. However, Labour's Research, Science and Innovation spokesperson Dr Deborah Russell expressed concerns that cutting humanities and social sciences from the fund would jeopardise academic research. This decision could lead to a brain drain as talented individuals seek opportunities abroad.
The Marsden Fund has supported critical research, including investigations into alcohol advertising on social media and how rape trials can re-traumatise complainants. The cuts come amid other cost-cutting measures by the government, resulting in over 500 job losses in the public science sector. New Zealand currently only spends half the OECD average on science, research, and development, sparking calls for the government to prioritise research.
According to Dr Russell, these cuts will leave gaps in important knowledge areas, ultimately hindering the country's progress in advancing its economy, protecting its environment, and building its cultural identity.
