Conservation Management Modernisation Proposals

Conservation Management Modernisation Proposals

New proposals aim to modernise New Zealand's conservation management system.

The Government has released two discussion documents for public consultation on proposals to modernise New Zealand's conservation management system. Conservation Minister Tama Potaka says the world has changed since the Conservation Act was enacted in 1987, and these proposals aim to bring the conservation system up to date.

Key proposals include simplifying conservation rules, reducing red tape for eco-tourism, maximising benefits from commercial activities on conservation land, developing amenities areas that protect nature while enhancing visitor experiences, and increasing flexibility for land exchanges or disposals. The Government is also consulting on introducing access charges for some public conservation areas to create new revenue streams.

The discussion documents are available on the Department of Conservation website, with consultation closing in late-February 2025. The Minister encourages all New Zealanders to read the documents and share their views.
