Conservation Boards Gain New Members

64 new appointments to 14 boards announced nationwide.

New Zealand's Conservation Minister, Tama Potaka, has appointed 64 individuals to the country's 14 Conservation Boards. The move aims to strengthen environmental efforts across Aotearoa New Zealand.

The boards serve as a liaison between the Department of Conservation (DOC) and local communities, ensuring their voices are heard on conservation issues. As independent bodies, they empower local communities and iwi to contribute to the management of conservation areas. This collaboration enables local concerns to be considered in DOC's work and national decision-making processes.

The appointments took effect from 1 November 2024, following an application process that drew 394 interested individuals. Minister Potaka expressed his appreciation for the appointees' skills and qualities, which he believes will make a positive impact on native species and ecosystems. The Minister welcomed new members, thanked outgoing representatives, and acknowledged the community's enthusiasm for conservation management.
