The ACT-National Coalition Agreement has released findings on "no additional warming" from its pet project.
The Green Party Co-Leader and Climate Change spokesperson, Chlöe Swarbrick, is critical of the review. She claims that the Government used it as a smokescreen to lower climate ambition. The report and Ministerial comments have made this intention clear, according to Swarbrick.
A "no additional warming" approach would mean that other parts of society and economy will carry a higher burden or reduce New Zealand's necessary contribution to global climate action, the Climate Change Commission and Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment have previously stated. Chlöe Swarbrick has called on Climate Minister Simon Watts to stand up against this perceived attempt to undermine climate action.
Swarbrick also accused Prime Minister Christopher Luxon of being hoodwinked by lobbyists who have tried a similar tactic in Australia. The review's findings and implications have sparked outrage among environmental advocates, with Swarbrick demanding more transparency and accountability from the Government on its climate policy.
