Christchurch Homeowners Betrayed Again

Christchurch Homeowners Betrayed Again

The Government's broken promises.

Labour Party spokesperson Duncan Webb has slammed the government for introducing new rules that will deny Christchurch homeowners the repairs they were promised after their houses were damaged in earthquakes. The new regulations, set by ACT leader David Seymour, include time limits on signing settlement agreements and a cap on repair costs and project management fees. This move means many people will not receive the full compensation they are entitled to for botched repairs carried out by EQC (now the Natural Hazards Commission).

According to Webb, these rules contradict the government's earlier commitments to support homeowners in Christchurch. He claims that the decision is a clear indication of the government's lack of concern for those affected by the earthquakes. The Labour Party has called on the government to reconsider its stance and honour its promises to Christchurch residents.

Webb stated that the project will not be complete until all quake-damaged houses are repaired, emphasizing the need for proper compensation for homeowners. He also expressed concerns about the practicality of finding builders and completing repairs within the given timeframes. The Labour Party believes that this decision is a clear betrayal of Christchurch residents who have been waiting for justice after being let down by EQC's botched repairs.
