New trade deal for organic products.
New Zealand's Food Safety Minister Andrew Hoggard announced a strengthened Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) with China, aimed at boosting the country's organic export sector. The upgraded MRA was signed in Central Otago on 25 October by Minister Hoggard and Mr Luo Wen, China's Minister for State Administration for Market Regulation.
The deal is expected to increase trade opportunities for New Zealand's organic product exporters, particularly those involved in bulk food service ingredients. According to industry figures, organic exports to China were worth over $81 million in the 2021/22 financial year.
The MRA recognises the equivalence of both countries' organic production and certification systems, allowing for a streamlined certification process. The agreement also marks a shared commitment by New Zealand and China to boost two-way trade, driven by their strong bilateral relationship.
The new arrangement takes effect immediately, with a joint work programme between New Zealand and China expected to start this year. The deal is seen as a step towards the government's goal of doubling the value of exports in the next decade, which will drive more economic benefits for rural communities across the country.
