Australia Pact Sparks New Zealand Concerns

Aotearoa New Zealand's foreign policy independence is at stake.

The Green Party has expressed alarm over the country's potential involvement in the AUKUS military pact, citing concerns over its leader's volatile approach to international relations. According to Green Party Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Teanau Tuiono, Aotearoa New Zealand must steer clear of any military alliances with the US, particularly under a new leadership that is perceived as having fascist leanings and an aggressive stance towards certain nations.

The current geopolitical climate calls for caution, with the US involvement in atrocities in Gaza and the Middle East serving as a warning to other countries. Teanau Tuiono emphasized the need for Aotearoa New Zealand to remain a voice for diplomacy and dialogue, rather than becoming embroiled in conflict through its military pacts.

The Green Party believes that pursuing an independent foreign policy will allow Aotearoa New Zealand to focus on climate action, protect nature, advocate for indigenous and human rights, and global justice. In contrast, joining the AUKUS framework would jeopardize the country's independence and voice in world affairs, according to Tuiono.
