Auckland Gets $1.3m Crime-Boosting Funding

The Government allocates $1.3 million funds.

Auckland Minister Simeon Brown and Associate Justice Minister Nicole McKee announced the funding as part of a Proceeds of Crime Fund to tackle increased antisocial behaviour in central Auckland's CBD. The money will support Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) to implement initiatives such as improved lighting, more CCTV cameras, and enhanced security patrols.

The anti-crime measures complement new developments including a 24/7 police station set to open on Federal Street and additional police officers deployed in the area to improve safety. Auckland Minister Simeon Brown prioritizes ensuring the central city's safety due to its economic significance, contributing 8% of New Zealand's national GDP in 2023.

The funding comes from the Proceeds of Crime Fund, established under the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act 2009. The recovered money is converted into community-based initiatives addressing crime-related harm and promoting wellbeing. Associate Justice Minister Nicole McKee views this funding as a valuable extension of New Zealand's justice system.
