198 Affordable Homes for Whānau

A multi-million dollar investment aims to deliver affordable rentals nationwide.

The New Zealand government has announced an $82 million partnership with Māori housing providers to build 198 affordable rental homes. The project, supported by Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, will benefit whānau across the country.

Twelve Māori housing providers have been selected to create a total of 198 homes in areas with high demand for affordable housing. Eight projects are located in priority locations such as Northland, East Coast, Hawkes Bay, Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, and Waikato. The remaining four are in Nelson, Ohakune, Taumarunui, and Masterton.

The homes will be affordable rentals with rent capped at 80 percent of the market rate. Associate Housing Minister Tama Potaka says these developments represent a fresh start for whānau and a secure foundation to grow and thrive. The government's commitment to fixing the housing crisis in New Zealand is part of its overall plan to alleviate shortages across the country.

The project aims to start building within the next 12 months, with the goal of providing safe and affordable housing for those who need it most.
